Brown Bird 03:52
No thunder, no lightning, we can barely call it rain just a brown bird singing: no reason to complain. You did the laundry and you shrunk my sweater sleeves;that brown bird was singing from our driveway full of leaves... Hundreds of things in this crazy world, they break the heart of this city girl that little brown bird, singing like she's praying might not be much but I wouldn't trade it, I wouldn't trade it I found your love note while you were out with your friends that brown bird singing, that little winter wren woke for a minute when you laid down last night that brown bird was out there while we snuggled up tight... Hundreds of things in this crazy world, they break the heart of this city girl that little brown bird, singing like she's praying might not be much but I wouldn't trade it, I wouldn't trade it I steal the pillows, he steals the covers, that brown bird out there while we're waking one another I make the coffee just a little too strong and that brown bird keeps coming back every time I think she's gone... Hundreds of things in this crazy world, they break the heart of this city girl that little brown bird, singing like she's praying might not be much but I wouldn't trade it, I wouldn't trade it

All the people with their freckles and braids with their private prayers and their hot crusades after today, but before the grave we all want to see those better days woke up this morning; I was climbing the walls I got locked in ad it's my own fault one little window and a warm dusty ray Tomorrow's not the time to work for the better days Three Red Feathers on a silver arrow that arrow on a bow hold that bow up against a shoulder after you aim, you gotta let it go. All the bridges are down now and their is no holding back Bring out all the questions that you've been afraid to ask wake up the bears and get them out of the caves and get us all just a little closer to those better days Three Red Feathers on a silver arrow that arrow on a bow hold that bow up against a shoulder after you aim, you gotta let it go. That face in the mirror; she's still got my name We've all got trouble and we've all got pain one little window and a warm dusty ray tomorrow's not the time to work for the better days. Three Red Feathers on a silver arrow that arrow on a bow hold that bow up against a shoulder after you aim, you gotta let it go.

Summer was a party and every night a fire every night a little bit hotter, every night a little bit higher I thought that was love when he gave me a cute little wink I thought that was love by the old river rope swing We kissed from dark till dawn without taking a breath I thought he was touching my heart, but that was really just my chest. You can't see a dead end until you're halfway around the bend You can't see a dead end until you're halfway around the bend They say everybody has a song in their strings don't overplay it and don't over sing I wrote it out in paper and pencil I wrote it out careful and gentle. I sealed it with my kisses; the best of my best aiming at his heart but it bounced right off his chest. You can't see a dead end until you're halfway around the bend You can't see a dead end until you're halfway around the bend The maples they are blushing a little deeper everyday you can't keep leaves from falling; you get ready with your rake. That long road out; it's all weeds and stones. That long road out is still the shortest road home Anybody who gives a damn makes some sort of mess the first time a broken heart echoes in their chest. You can't see a dead end until you're halfway around the bend You can't see a dead end until you're halfway around the bend

She's a fool hearted, try and try harder, a winter day in her summer dress. She paints stars on her walls, got a good friend she calls but she is sometimes uneasy nonetheless busy and bored in an everyday trance she can slap on a smile, she can fake it through the dance. He's a fool hearted try and try harder asking those cards to guide him. Sometimes their advice, doesn't sit quite right probably due to that secret that he is hiding. He can pinpoint the difference between luck and chance He can slap on a smile, he can fake it through the dance He says and she says and he says again he's doing cartwheels and she calls that friend he says and she says and he says again then everything's quiet until someone bends... They were fool hearted try and try harders aiming to belt out the high notes making all the mistakes, all the squeaks and the breaks but they throw back their heads, and let it cry folks. They find themselves happy in dark circumstance when they slap on a smile, when they fake it through the dance.

Clothes in the corner, papers in a pile, papers in a pile, and the worry in my head minutes slippin by me, I'm thinking of the mountains; thinking of the mountains, wishing I was there instead. Out there I don't make all my same, my same mistakes Out there I don't make all my same, my same mistakes Done with the daydream, my legs are aching; my legs are aching from sitting still too long up on a ridgeline somewhere in the distance; somewhere in the distance all that trouble is outrun. Out there I don't make all my same, my same mistakes Out there I don't make all my same, my same mistakes If there's gonna be a change better make it in the morning; make it in the morning before the chaos comes. Before I get on board, before I'm bailing water; before I'm bailing water and the knots come undone. Those highlands are calling, the pines and the hemlocks; pines and hemlocks, and the trail under my boots Up above the treeline those stars are spilling over; stars are spilling over and I'm starting over too... Out there I don't make all my same, my same mistakes Out there I don't make all my same, my same mistakes

Paper Roses 03:58
You and I were both alight at the start of this escade We'd only seen what we'd seen before We were blindly unafraid Took that ride up the river valley in your old rusty Nova I fell for sure for that blue bandana you wore for morning yoga. We found flowers in a backyard of weeds- a minute left to play and we wouldn't take defeat. Walk around the block again in the break in the rain cover up all those spots we missed with a new coat of paint You pretend to know whats wrong, I pretend to know whats right It's harder tan we thought to keep it all aligned Paper Roses and an old time band we put the sweet in with the salt and we took the chance we lit the lanterns and we watched them rise one got caught in a maple tree and the rest got to the sky Maybe this parade's amiss; maybe those are broken clocks maybe we could find a hundred reasons why we ought to stop no one ever promised we'd make it without scars I want to sleep up in the mountains, but I'd settle for my own backyard Paper Roses and an old time band we put the sweet in with the salt and we took the chance we lit the lanterns and we watched them rise one got caught in a maple tree and the rest got to the sky and I set that last one free, all cause you helped me reach.

There were mothers crying on both sides That's a war like any war came back and married that girl that he left behind went back to working at the family store Time and labor brought diamonds and plenty and it got easy to expect he'd wake up happy like the day before and just like the day before that Hickory is dependable, but nothing lasts like stone he built himself a hammer then he built himself a home. Black Tuesday was a dark surprise The whole ceiling fell anyone with anything took all they could carry the rest could just fend for themselves He could have kept that gold in his pocket could have locked the door with his children and wife but he paid the men who'd been working for him lost his money but he kept his pride. Hickory is dependable, but nothing lasts like stone he built himself a hammer; he could build another home. Use what you have right where you are your old sweater is your brand new scarf If we can't fix that gate maybe we don't need a gate up anyway The money never really came back again the house was small and work was hard he could still expect to wake up happy with just a new piece of wood to carve They told me stories about that man and I'd go down in his old woodshop hold all the handles that he made with his hands picture his prayers and feel his love. Hickory is dependable, but nothing lasts like stone he built himself a hammer then he built himself a home. Hickory is dependable, but nothing lasts like stone First he built a hammer, he built himself a hammer, you know I used that hammer to build myself a home.

One more little white sin; one more little white sin for better or for worse that glass is full again One more little white sin Thunder gets too close and there is no way to skip the storm lightning always strikes where you are already torn turn around you'll see it building up behind you If you forget you love me, I'll try to remind you. One more little white sin; one more little white sin for better or for worse that glass is full again One more little white sin In the aftermath that tear is done the neighbors turn their lights out and neither one of us has won. Turn around you'll see the wreckage behind you you forgot you love me, I tried to remind you. One more little white sin; one more little white sin for better or for worse that glass is full again One more little white sin The moon is still there on those dark nights a break in the clouds and there is the light. Turn around you'll see silver on the pine trees If I forget I love you, try to remind me. One more little white sin; one more little white sin for better or for worse that glass is full again One more little white sin

Sam's Song 03:54
you're the razzle and the dazzle in the afternoon you're the pink sock puppet with the peacock plume you're the bell on the cow when he jumps the moon you're the chocalate batter on the oversize spoon The apple at the tippy tippy top of the tree, you're the the picture that they're waiting in a line to see You're the splash in the puddle on the count of three and the heart I wear out on my sleeve. Ring every bell that you can Take the seed in your hand stick it in the dirt little sun little squirt little time and then they'll rise like rubies that little piece of beauty like all the beauty this world has shown to me Your the dust of snow on the closest peak you're the groove that gets them up off the seat you're the story that we're up all night to read You're the top of the wave when it hits the beach. You're bright wet paint without a sign you're the sticky smell of the old sweet pine lace in the sun on the laundry line the part of the song we can all rewind Ring every bell that you can Take the seed in your hand stick it in the dirt little sun little squirt little time and then they'll rise like rubies that little piece of beauty like all the beauty this world has shown to me you're the secret key underneath the mat you're the kind of mouse that outsmarts the trap you're the honey in the tea you're a belly laugh you're the king, you're the queen you're the ace, you're the jack you're a pearl and a bloom and a big bear hug You're the sing along and the party punch you're a new tree growing in an old tree stump a labor of love, a labor of love. Ring every bell that you can Take the seed in your hand stick it in the dirt little sun little squirt little time and then they'll rise like rubies that little piece of beauty like all the beauty this world has shown to me

The Lady of the Mountains, so many times she has seen that buzzing burst of summer, so many shades of green. She can't help but smile when that green goes to gold Her heart of hearts waits for the snow The lady of the mountains, she's ready to forget a year of lost love; a whole year overslept Promises not kept she'll press into coal and burn for warmth in that first fallen snow When summer decides that she's satisfied and sends her blessing up to the sky they open the gates and quiet the sounds and heaven comes down to lie on the ground The Lady of the Mountains, she wears the wilderness wrapped around her shoulders and tucked around her neck Places we can't go, days beyond roads Life is out there living, even under the snow. When summer decides that she's satisfied and sends her blessing up to the sky they open the gates and quiet the sounds and heaven comes down to lie on the ground

about

Jes Raymond & The Blackberry Bushes Seattle, Washington

The Appalachian Mountains are the meeting place of the fiddle and the banjo, and musical culture permeates the entire length of the Mississippi River. The Blackberry Bushes are rooted in the rainy bottom of the Puget Sound, but their work is infused with the essence of the homes they wandered West from.
They have a playful and resonant sound with both twang and sophistication.
